Break Inertia with Baby Steps

by | Jun 19, 2025 | Uncategorized

Everything is in constant motion in the universe, but it doesn’t feel like it when I’m on the couch binge-watching Netflix. Lack of motivation can easily take over, and I have an inner voice that’s not really happy about it. It’s not the voice that beats me about being lazy, although she speaks sometimes…but it’s the voice that whispers, and it comes with the feeling that I know I’ll be happier if I do things in alignment with my soulful self. Binge-watching TV only satisfies me for short stints, and my body and my creative self start getting restless.

Is that so for you?

I am only realizing now, post-hip replacement, that the consequences of my lack of movement during decades of my life have left me with muscles I need to build up and bones I need to strengthen. I did yoga, but I didn’t do the resistance or weight training that builds bone and muscles, which sustain our mobility as we age.

I started walking ten minutes a day last week, and I’m up to 20 minutes this week. I’ve made it easy and enjoy listening to music and podcasts when I’m doing it. Movement also strengthens our heart muscle and stimulates our brain.

We can have all the intellectual information in the world, and if we don’t set it in motion, we remain inert. This can lead to unhappiness, making us feel like we’re not doing what truly lights us up, and often leaves us anxious and restless.

But if we start with baby steps and a timer (if you’ve read my book or are part of the tribe, you know how much I love these two things), we can make significant strides in moving energy. In physics, energy is essential for starting and continuing motion. And when we set energy in motion…it stays in motion.

Here are some motion starters.

1 Practice to Tune into the Body

The 5-Minute Inertia Breaker: Commit to just five minutes of activity. Whether it’s a quick walk, a short meditation, or jotting down ideas in a journal, starting small can break the chains of inertia. Often, those five minutes will naturally extend as your energy begins to flow.

2 Shifts to Observe the Mind…with curiosity and an open heart

Visualization: Spend a few moments each day visualizing your goals as if they are already achieved. Imagine the feelings of success, the joy, and the satisfaction. This mental rehearsal can create a powerful pull towards making these visions a reality.

Affirmations: Use positive affirmations to reinforce your beliefs and intentions. Phrases like “I am energized and motivated” or “I am in harmony with the energy of the universe” can help shift your mindset from stagnation to action. (Speaking of affirmations- I have a micro-course coming out soon – Empowerment Cards – Artful Affirmation Reminders to Release Limiting Thoughts and Behaviors).

3 Quotes and a Question to Awaken the Soul

“Energy flows where attention goes.” – Tony Robbins

“The universe doesn’t give you what you ask for with your thoughts; it gives you what you demand with your actions.” – Steve Maraboli

“Inertia is the death of creativity. Move, and the universe moves with you.” – Unknown

And drumroll…the Question

“What is one area of your life where you feel stuck, and what emotions or beliefs might be holding you back from taking action?” (Is there a 5 Minute Inertia Breaker you can do?)
