Sustenance for the Body, Mind, and Soul – Savor!
Here are actionable steps to make your life easier, happier, and less anxious. I’ll address a weekly topic and offer practices, shifts, quotes, and questions to feed your body, mind, and spirit. As we recognize the thoughts and behaviors that rob happiness, we can take action to enrich our inner life. The result…a big smile and a twinkle in our eyes.
This week’s topic and a life-changing question – Where is Your Attention?
Being mindful of where your attention resides is crucial in cultivating mindfulness, as it shapes your experience and influences our well-being. Attention is the lens through which we perceive the world; by being aware of it, we can consciously choose where to direct our focus. This intentional redirection enhances our ability to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively, reducing stress and fostering a deeper sense of presence. Through mindful attention, we develop a greater understanding of our thoughts and emotions, empowering us to make more aligned and intentional choices in our lives.
1 Practice to Tune into the Body
When you are choosing what to eat, focus your attention on how hungry you are on a scale of 1 – 10, 1 being not hungry, 10 being very hungry. Reflect on what information you gain from your choice, for example, if you are one and choose to eat.
2 Shifts to Observe the Mind…with curiosity and an open heart
When your mind is overloaded with thoughts (isn’t that our usual state…lol), remember you can give your thoughts less attention. “Thoughts, when disengaged from our attention, fade into the background. Instead of having a megaphone, they are just distant whispers.” – e’Layne Kelley, Roadmap to Ease.
Pause and Reflect: When you notice your mind racing or filled with anxious thoughts, pause momentarily. Take a deep breath and ask yourself, “What am I thinking right now?” This simple awareness can highlight negative thought patterns. Reflect on how these thoughts make you feel emotionally and physically. Recognizing this connection can offer insight into how your thinking affects your emotional state.
3 Quotes and A Question to Awaken the Soul
“The life you experience is the life you focus on.” – Tony Robbins
“Whatever you focus on, you’re going to feel. If you focus on what’s wrong, everything’s wrong. What’s wrong is always available if you look for it, but so is what’s right.”
“When we begin practicing paying attention to the activity of our mind, it is common to discover and to be surprised by the fact that we are constantly generating judgments about our experience.” – Jon Kabat-Zinn
And drumroll…the Question
“How does the way you allocate your attention each day align with your core values and long-term aspirations?”
