“My crow friends come to visit several times a day…I stand in the middle with one on each side and we stare at the water for a long time. Crows had a powerful place in my life, but I’ve never had a personal relationship with them like this…it’s sweet.

How I Dealt with 4 am Troubling Thoughts This Morning
I woke up at 4:00 AM, but I couldn’t get back to sleep. My mind was churning over a frustrating situation. The short story is that I need 5 minutes of a person’s time to redo his invoice for my insurance company, and I have been requesting it for months. Without the invoice, I can’t get over $7000 that I’m owed.

I think you know how 4:00 am mental conversations never go well. My mind churned over all the things that I had done for him that made his life easier, and how he won’t respond to this one simple request. My spiraling thoughts had jacked me up to about the level of drinking a pot of coffee. I know that to resume a calm demeanor, it was up to me to calm the hell down.

What I did helped me, and I share this story because I know we all go through getting worked up…and not just at 4 am. First, I remembered my “go-to” thought. I don’t know the details of what is happening in another person’s life. This thought alone provided some space to catch a deep, mindful breath.

Then I put on an Insight Timer meditation. At the end of the meditation, the teacher said the Metta Prayer – May I be well, may I be peaceful, may I be free. May all beings be well, may they be peaceful, may they be free. This brought me down another notch. Sleep evaded me, so I got up.

Moving energy is always helpful when trying to get out of a funk. I put away dishes, wiped down counters, and realized I was grateful for another day.
I did one more thing that really opened my eyes. I make it a practice when I’m pissed about something to ask, “What’s my part in this?” The person I’m dealing with is a good person; he’s probably buried in details and not keeping up with life. Turning the mirror on myself, what wasn’t I keeping up with?

With this question in mind, I looked around my house…notebooks from classes I took ten years ago, all 97 drafts of my book, art supplies I’ll never use, 15 purses hiding in a cute trunk. Instead of being lost in thinking about a situation I had no control over in the moment, there were things in front of me I could do something about.
I haven’t gone back to sleep. I did send my buddy a kind email to please send me the requested invoice. I sent it from a place of loving kindness. I’m too tired to kick ass today…lol.

The moral of the story…when we’re jacked up…pissed off…riding on the out-of-control “negative thought” train, we can remember….to resume a calm demeanor (which will make space for clear thinking), it’s up to us to calm ourselves down. It takes practice, and we don’t have to do it perfectly. Remember, there are roadmaps to navigate the way, Roadmap to Ease being one of them.

Big love to all of you. Thanks so much for being here, e’Layne
1  Practice to Tune into Your Body
When on the runaway thought train, focus on the sensations in your body and rhythmically breathe into them.

2 Shifts to Observe the Mind…with curiosity and an open heart.
Our thoughts have the steering wheel…continually be a backseat driver, observant and ready to grab the wheel when thoughts are going in the wrong direction.
When you observe yourself imprisoned by negative thoughts, make a decision…What will be the first thing you will do to interrupt them…such as, I will take deep breaths until I feel peaceful…I will go for a ten-minute walk.

3 Quotes and a Question to Awaken the Soul
“A thought has no energy but what you lend it. Let them run away. Don’t try to follow them. Don’t try to stop them.”
“We are addicted to our thoughts. We cannot change anything if we cannot change our thinking.”         – Santosh Kalwar
“Guard well your thoughts when alone and your words when accompanied.”   – Roy T. Bennett

And drumroll…the Question
What is the one thing you will do to interrupt runaway or negative thoughts?
